Saarda Kotka enjoyed walking the Crossroad Plains. The Pokemon were diverse, the people were friendly, and she'd met her newest pokemon there. Pidge and Tai were resting in their balls. Maelon was unsuited to the terrain, but she loved the glinting of the amber colored grasses, and distant rivers, which shown like silvery scars, puckering the land and at the same time, refreshing it, turning it a verdant green and producing small trees and shrubs. She breathed deeply of the freshness of the air, before sighing, looking around, and tossing Emery the Growlithe's pokeball out. When the red light cleared, he was standing firmly nose to the ground, eyes closed. "Em?" She called.
He opened his eyes at his trainer's voice and cautiously turned to her. The last time he'd heard that voice, it'd been during the capture. "Grow..." He growled.
"You know who I am, right? I'm your trainer, Saarda."
Emery sat and frowned, clearly pondering her words. After his expression turned from serious to dazed, Saarda snapped her fingers. "Emery!" The fire dog's eyes snapped to hers, and his posture corrected it's self. "You understand what that means? You lost the battle against me and my pokemon, so you're one of my pokemon now."
Growlithe appeared shocked for a moment, then he stood up and barked at her. She frowned, and knelt so that she could take his head in her hands and force an eye-to-eye connection. "Emery. I am your trainer now." She said firmly. "Together with my other Pokemon, you and I are going to travel the world and do amazing things. Do you understand now?"
Emery nodded, and licked her collarbone, where the scrapes from their tussle were visible. They'd bruised and bled, but she hadn't been willing to let the staff at the pokemon center tend them, because it would have taken their attention away from the Pokemon. "Yeah." She said, "That was from you." He whined and nuzzled them apologetically, pushing her accidentally to the ground then seeing that as an invitation, he moved onto her lap, and hummed happily with her chuckling and petting his mane of white fur. "Good boy."
As with all moments, filled with that happy spirit of blooming friendship, this one had to end. The call of a pokemon, and the sound of rushing feet made the trainer and pokemon pair pause. Emery pulled off of her lap, ears flat and growled. Saarda stood and looked around. She didn't see it yet, but there was sure to be a wild Pokemon nearby. "Get ready, Emery." She said, "We're going to battle soon."
The Growlithe barked his agreement.

Saarda and Emery waited for a moment, tense, before it appeared. The Electrike was running headlong in their direction, but when it saw them, it tried to stop. Instead of stopping, it skidded, and flipped, rolling to Saarda's- or in actuality, as Emery had stepped before her, the Growlithe's feet. He barked at the electric dog in confusion. It leapt up to it's feet, shaking it's head, and yipped at Growlithe urgently. It moved left. He followed, wagging his tail.
Electrike shuffled it's feet for a moment before darting the other way, only Growlithe was there too. He barked at her again, this time, however, he wasn't so friendly. "Be careful not to touch her, she might know spark. Hit her with Ember!"
Growlithe barked once more in acknowledgement and spat pieces of fire at the electric pokemon. Electrike hissed as the fire scorched into her coat, and with irritation burning in her, she rammed into Emery full force. He whined, and looked to his trainer, who instantly called, “Emery, don’t just stand there; bite her!”
Emery followed directions very well. He sunk his sharp teeth into Electrike’s neck and shook vigorously, til she, whining shook him off. She bolted away, but he wasn’t far behind, nipping at her tail, as she rounded, and bounded back at Saarda. However, seeing her direction, Emery roared in anger and leapt upon the other dog pokemon, biting at her crest and shoulders. She cowered in the face of the Roar, and tried to put off a thunder wave, but it faltered. Emery bit on her paw, and shook. She butted him with her head and tried to scratch with her claws, but to no avail. He was stronger physically, heavier, and well padded with fur. He knew it. He barked in her face and batted her nose with his paw.
“Emery, no-“
As he batted her, she got free, and loosed an electric wave which sparked over the Growlithe, making him freeze, whining. Electrike circled Emery growling, keeping low. She prowled around him with an air of superiority, as if lecturing him with her presence, ‘This is how you stand. Silly boy. Too bad you didn’t realize earlier how you stood no chance against me…’ “Ele.” She said as if to confirm this thought. Then, she tackled him, and the paralysis wore off. He scrunched around and bit her neck, pushing her, no bowling her over with the force of his attack, and standing above her snarling into her throat, paws on her shoulers, and one foot on her belly.
“Quickly, roar!” She commanded. He did, feet still planted. “Now retreat three steps, eyes on her, and burn her with Ember. A big one!”
Emery leapt back, whirled around and launched embers at the female pokemon, scorching her left flank, and scalding her belly. She cried out loudly, cowering. “Again!” He did so, and she limped to her feet, launching herself at him. “Roar!” He did, and her steps faltered. She looked back, fear clear in her eyes. Saarda wondered what was so scary to the Electrike that she would rather fight a battle with a trainer and a growlithe than return to face it. “Hit her now, full force, Emery, then run in for a bite, cut her off if she tries to run, and pin her again!”
Growlithe nodded, lunged forward with Ember, following the flames. He hit her shoulder, and lunged further to bite her shoulder. She tried to tear off, but he clung, forcing her to stumble, then tumble. He pinned her, barking loudly, then bit her muzzle as she tried to nip at him, closing his jaws powerfully over hers in an odd parody of a kiss. He snarled at her, locking eyes. “Retreat. I’m going to catch her!” Saarda said, tossing the pokeball to hit the Electrike before Emery moved. “You did very well, Em.” She said, waiting as the light pulled the green electric type into the ball, and caused it to shake…

When the pokeball went dark, Saarda whooped, and tackled Emery in a hug, "Good boy!" She said, scratching his scruff. "We did it!"
Emery huffed happily, and licked her ear. Then he squirmed out of her grasp, and nudged the pokeball with his nose. He accidentally opened it, and the newly caught Electrike resolved before him in a stunned pose amid the grasses. Saarda shrugged, and knelt next to her, "Well, look at you." She said, patting Electrike on the head. Her fur was short and stiff, almost coarse. A stark difference from Emery's long soft fur. "Hmm..." She said scratching the area above where Saarda supposed Electrike's ear to be. "How bout Trish?" She muttered. "Trish, I'm your new trainer. Saarda Kotka. This big fellow here is Emery. Since we defeated you in a pokemon battle, you're a part of my team now. Do you understand?"
Electrike nodded, and straightened herself, looking around nervously. "You're OK, girl." Saarda murmured. "Don't worry overly much. I won't let anyone hurt you. You can be sure of that." Trish huffed a bit then stood and pawed the ground, glancing furtively behind her. "Well, now, I should probably introduce the two of you to the rest of our team, huh?" She nodded, and released Pidge, Tai and Maelon. The birds came out flying, swooped up, then circled and landed gracefully upon their traner's shoulders. Maelon squeaked as he saw the electric dog, and scrambled to stand between Saarda's legs. "This little surskit is Maelon. I caught him before Emery. The taillow on my shoulder is Tai, and the Pidgey is Pidge. Pidge was my first pokemon ever. Everyone, this is Trish the Electrike and Emery the Growlithe." As all of the Pokemon said their hellos, Saarda smiled and looked out over the plains. "We've got five team members. Almost a full set." She pulled out her pokedex and registered Electrike.
~Electrike, the Lightning Pokémon. Using the electric charge stored in its fur, it can run faster than the eye can follow. It generates electricity using friction from the atmosphere. In seasons with especially arid air, its entire body blazes with violent showers of sparks.~
"Cool." She said, patting Trish on the head. "We should do some training..." She said, almost reluctantly. The birds took off and began their diving practice. Saarda nodded at them, "Good job." Then she turned back to the remaining three. "Right... OK. How do I train a surskit?" She wondered. "Maelon... spit bubbles into the air, then tackle them."
She turned to Emery and Trish, and said, "You two are going to train together. You both need to work on your agility. So, this is going to be a game of tag. Emery, you're it first. You might never be as fast as Trish, but you are bigger and stronger. Use your advantages to your advantage." She said, Electrike took off in the direction of the birds, and Growlithe, stunned by her speed for a moment hesitated. “Emery, now!” He looked at his trainer, then at the green blur in the distance, wondering how he could catch her. “Emery, use what you have against her. You have size, strength, bite, roar and ember. That should be enough. Go!” Emery nodded and took off after her, roaring deafeningly. All of the Pokemon faltered in their exercises, but Trish most of all. She stumbled and rolled, tangling herself in grasses and her own legs. “Trish get used to the roar! I want the two of you to become as good together as Tai and Pidge!” Trish got to her feet roughly the same time as Emery appeared before her. He nipped her nose, and took off back toward her. Prancing proudly, tail fluffed in the air with a smug look of satisfaction on his face, but then Trish was there, shooting off a thunderwave, which stopped Emery in his tracks. Trish tackled him so he fell and unfroze, then continued running toward her trainer, circling around- but before she could make her circuit, Emery was there, blocking her. He barked, and lunged forward playfully. Trish faltered, stepping back. She looked to Saarda with fear. “You’re alright girl.” She encouraged. “Don’t let that big boy intimidate you.” Trish nodded and used thunder wave again. Emery leapt aside, and barked proudly. “Good boy. Shrug it off.” It was around this time, that Saarda saw the wild pokemon coming near. “Steady and alert! Return to me and don’t fight unless I call you to.” She called out. “Trish, look live. I want to see what you can do.”

The pokemon filed back to their trainer, taking position, tense in anticipation. Trish was pawing the ground, eyes raking the scene before them, she saw the wild pokemon before her trainer, and whined piteously. It seemed they had found what had frightened the little Electrike so badly that she and her pokemon did not seem too scary in comparison. It seemed to be a large purple balloon with yellow heart shaped hands, and an X over its mouth. A tuft of white something swirled out of the top of its head. Oddly, it looked like a cloud. For the life of her, Saarda could recall no information on the pokemon, so she whipped out her pokedex, and focused it on the wild pokemon, which seemed to be floating along at a meandering pace in their general direction… though it was hard to say. It could have been going somewhere else entirely.
Saarda frowned as she watched it come closer. She tapped the pokedex, which immediately gave her the information she needed… "Drifloon: A Pokémon formed by the spirits of people and Pokémon. It loves damp, humid seasons. Because of the way it floats aimlessly, an old folktale calls it a 'Signpost for Wandering Spirits'."' The Pokedex said tonelessly.
Saarda scratched her head. “Bring up the stats you have on it.” She said, and watched as a myriad of semi-pertinent information floated across the screen.
"Wow." She said, "Ghost type." She said, "Weak against... electric and fire." She smiled, "I think it's time to test you two, Trish, Emery, go.” At those words Trish whined sharply and pressed into her leg, hiding her face.
“What’s wrong? Scared?” She asked, kneeling. “You’re alright. We’re a family now, and I promise you, I will not let that big purple balloon pokemon hurt you.” She patted Trish on the crest of her head, “Now, do you trust me?”
The electrike shrugged.
“Well, I don’t blame you. We just met. But I made you a promise, right? Don’t be scared. You and Emery will do great together.” Emery nodded emphatically, and nudged her with his nose. Then he growled at the Drifloon, and grinned at Trish. He started prancing out onto the field, and before she could think to do otherwise, Trish resolved to protect Emery. Big dumb dog that he was, couldn’t possibly protect himself without her.
Saarda smiled, to see the exchange, and shouted orders, as usual, strategy had already resolved in her mind. “Trish use Thunderwave, then get clear, Emery when she's paralyzed it with thunderwave, hit it hard with a good sized ember attack! Remember, tackle won’t work on it, so whenever you see it moving, Trish, your job is to paralyze it again. Emery, stop staring off into space and hit Drifloon with ember!” Emery shook his head as if to clear it, and spat fire at the floating ghost pokemon, which shrieked as the fire scalded it’s skin. Then it froze as the electricity did its job, and paralyzed it. “Emery bite it!” The growlithe nodded with a snort and leapt at the purple ghost type snapping at its arms and then it’s underside. “Ember again!” Saarda cried out. “Trish, hit it with thundershock again!”
They repeated the pattern until thundershock missed, and Drifloon caught Emery by the neck in a constricting hold. Growlithe coughed and writhed, trying to shake it free, but doing little besides making things worse. Emery turned his head with effort to plead for help with Saarda. Trish was howling, and barking at the purple pokemon, leaping at it in tackles, but she simply passed through it. “Trish, don’t waste your energy! Use Thundershock again. When it freezes, Emery stay still.” She said firmly, “Pidge will come in and untangle you. After she returns to me, hit it again with ember. Got it?”
Trish sent forth a shimmering thunderwave in answer, then as the Drifloon froze, the lines of its arms slackened, and Pidge flapped over to untangle Emery, who, when free, roared furiously and sank his teeth into the ghost pokemon, shaking viciously. “Emery, do as I said! Ember, now!” She cried. “Get out of range of its arms, before Paralysis wears off!” Emery reluctantly let go, then blazed it with ember repeatedly. He danced back as it twitched inflating then deflating, but before it could use minimize, Trish hit it with Thunder wave again.
Saarda took the opportunity, which presented its self, as the balloon pokemon sagged in the air, looking sad and tired. “Pokeball, Go!” She shouted throwing the red and white orb. It landed on the ground, rocking, light blazing red.

Saarda grinned, but before she went to the Pokeball, she went to Emery. "Let me see." She requested, calling him to sit closer to her. "Look at me." She looked the welts Drifloon had caused over, tisking at the ones that caused bruises. "Poor boy." She murmured, stroking his head. She then pulled out a bottle of potion and salved his wounds. Within moments they were just a memory, and Emery was wagging his tail, tongue lolling in approval. "Trish, let me see." She beckoned the little green female, who approached cautiously, placing each foot with the utmost care. "Good girl, closer." Saarda called. Trish trotted a few steps then hunkered down at her feet, staring almost suspiciously at the bottle in her trainer's hands. Saarda salved over all the wounds from ember, earlier, and whispered apologies for not doing so sooner. When she was finished, she leveled her eyes with Trish's. "Did I keep my promise?" Trish nodded, and licked her trainer's hand. "Alright. Lets meet our newest team member." She picked the balloon pokemon's ball up and tossed it to release the pokemon within. Drifloon floated wearily before her. She smiled, "I'm Saarda Kotka, Pokemon trainer. Your trainer, in fact. We defeated you in battle, and I caught you. That means you're mine. She palmed some potion and closed the gap between them, Drifloon watched her carefully but didn't move. Now was not the time for silly antics. Saarda's hands, where they touched his skin, soothed and healed due to the potion. He closed his eyes and enjoyed the cool pleasure.
"Drif." He sighed, inflating himself with a happy little smile on his face. "Drifloon."
"We're going to be good friends, Drifloon." She said, patting the pokemon on the head. "Now, who is hungry?" Emery barked. "Figured." She said giving each pokemon their lunch, which was greeted with silence save for the sound of munching. "Right." She nodded, portioning out her own food. "Yours probably tastes better." She said to the pokemon. Pidge fluttered her feathers when she finished, and sat in Saarda's lap as though it were a nest. Soon she was sleeping. Saarda chuckled. Her newest pokemon floated around the group waving his arms about comically, inflating and deflating so he shot up, then slowly fell as he waved his arms. "Looks like we've got another character." She said smirking as Tailow joined in on the performance. Maelon finished eating and danced to her side, then cuddled up beside her knee, snoozing. Emery followed suit on the other side and encouraged the timid electrike to follow him, which she did. "We have quite a family." She said with a contented sigh. "It doesn't get better than this."
