The rays of light shining through the yellow canopy above my head stirred me to the land of the conscious. I scanned my small room, looking for Ralts. He was face down spread eagle on the little bed I had made for him. So I let him sleep soundly and got up carefully, trying to avoid nudging him in the confined spaces. I stepped outside in my shorts and tank top, looking about the forest for anything out of the ordinary. When nothing was found, I grabbed a stick and stoked the remains of the fire to see if smoke remained. With a nod of the head, I was satisfied it was safe to leave it alone, and I moved to a nearby creek to get a drink and fill up my canteen.
When I returned, Ralts was outside of the tent looking around. "Hiya Ralts! Just went to get some water, don't worry." I said with a smile. The little poke'mon hurried over to me and hugged my leg. Naturally, a chuckle left my lips as I bent over to pick him up. "Want some water?" I asked, giving him the canteen that was just a little bit smaller than himself. He clumsily grabbed onto it and leaned it back quickly, dousing us in water. "Oh geez!" I exclaimed as he innocently held the canteen with a childlike smile. I looked down at my shirt and sighed. "You lil' dork. Now look what you gone and done." I laughed. Setting him on the ground as he continued to try to drink, I removed my tank-top, the only layer I had on my torso.
With my shirt shed, I looked up to the sky. Partly cloudy, and it didn't feel like it was going to be a particularly hot day. So, I took the fabric and laid it out to dry and went over to my bag to pick out a couple poke'balls. "Come on Ralts, let's go exploring. Maybe we'll find some new friends."

We walked through the forest of Turnstone with attentive eyes, though half of the time was spent helping Ralts over obstacles. The poor little thing was so small still, and struggled to make it over some pretty imposing trees that had fallen over. Not only that, but his young curious mind was always getting side tracked on off focus. It was at that moment that I was deeply grateful for my parents. I was so easily getting annoyed with his lack of attention, but they had put up with a lifetime of my shenanigans. My sense of gratitude, however subtle, seemed to get Ralts attention. "Raa?" he inquired, as if attuned to my emotions. Which he was, but my inexperience had lead to my lack of knowledge on that matter.
"Oh nothing, just thinking about my parents, ya know, the people who raised me like I'm raising you." I explained, gesturing for Ralts to come back over to where I was. But he wouldn't budge. His arm was outstretched look, and the unseen eyes under his hood seemed fixated on something. "Did ya find something?" I asked out loud, slowly making my way over to him. "Ra." he replied definitively, as if confirming my question. As I got closer, I slowly peeked around a tree to look at what he had found. What I found made me reach into my pouch for my notepad. Yanking it out I began to draw what was going on before us.
A small Weedle was feeding on the leaf of a bush. I quickly began to sketch the scene, but not before giving recognition to Ralts. "Good job lil' buddy. Did good." I praised. Weedle was a poke'mon that I had knowledge of, because as a child, we were often warned to stay away from them because of the poison they produced. Such cautionary tales stayed my hand this time as well. My new friend was still new to this world, and I didn't want to tangle with the threat of poison already; despite the Weedle seeming to be equally fresh into the world as well.
Once I finished my rough sketch of the Weedle, I tapped Ralts on the head and motioned to follow me. As I mentioned, this was not the battle for us. So we continued forward. Every so often, we would take a break. Sometimes finding some berries to snack on, or a poke'mon to sketch. But all the while I looked for a poke'mon that might be able to give us our first challenge together. And find it, I did. As I dropped down from a small ledge, I turned to catch Ralts who was following behind. But once again, his outstretching palm pointed behind me. I slowly rotated my body so I could see what we had stumbled upon.
On the far side of the clearing, sat the Heracross, lounging in the sunlight. I was unsure what it was doing, I assumed just warming its body. But it may have been hunting. But keep in mind, I had no idea what this poke'mon was. This was as much a new discovery for me as it was for Ralts. I slowly turned back around and held a finger to my lips. "Shh..." I whispered, gesturing for him to jump into my arms. With a single step, Ralts fell into the cradle I had provided, and I slowly lowered him to the ground so I could take out my note book. With pen in hand, I began to depict the scene. But while I was absorbed in my sketching, Ralts was busy sneaking his way closer to the Heracross.
It was only when I was adding Ralts to the photo did I realize what was going on. "Ralts!" I said in a loud whisper. "Get back here, you're gonna wake it up!" I called. My poke'mon looked at me with a confused expression, and still inched closer and closer until the sound of a twig snapping halted him. We both froze, eyes glued to the Heracross. From it's position on the tree, it slowly pushed itself upward as if stretching, and turned to look around for who had disturbed it's slumber. "Don't move..." I strained, my fists clenching as my eyes watched Ralts. As Heracross' vision settled upon my poke'mon Ralts seemed to panic. "No...No!" I cried. But it was too late Ralts was running in a straight line toward me. Heracross took flight, and landed close behind chasing with it's head lowered to attack. Now was the decision. Fight or Flight.
It was time to attack. "Ralts, turn and use your confusion attack! See if we can throw it off!" I shouted. To my surprise, Ralts quickly turned to see where it's enemy was and just barely jumped out of the way of a thrust. With it's arms outstretched, Ralts focused and a purple shroud seemed to form around Heracross and Ralts simultaneously. Following the aura, I could almost feel the wave of energy as the attack hit and the aura vanished. Heracross staggered, trying to discern what had just happened. "Again!" I called. "Don't let him recover, if we wanna win we need to keep him off balance!" I shouted again. But confusion seemed to be taking it's time. This was Ralts first real battle, and he was still learning. As the purple aura appeared once again, Heracross began his charge.
The bug poke'mon was easily three feet taller than Ralts, but that seemed like an advantage from my point of view. The bug poke'mon was less agile, but obviously more powerful. As it lowered it's head once again, the confusion took effect and sent the attack off course. unfortunately it still hit Ralts in the shoulder sending him tumbling a few feet away. "Ralts!" I shouted running closer to where the bout occurred. The bug was still a threat, so I threw a poke'ball in it's direction to attempt to capture it while I stayed with Ralts. "You okay there?" I asked in a soft voice, looking over my shoulder to see if Heracross would come out to terrorize us again.

"I need you to get up buddy, we need to finish this together." I pleaded, as Ralts looked up to me. "We can do it." I said offering my hand to help him up. With renewed vigor, my tiny friend grabbing onto a couple of my fingers and pulled himself up, ready for me. At that most the poke'ball burst open and the Heracross came out angrier than before. "Let's do this! Confusion, and make it count." I said. The little green headed poke'mon focused his power this time, as Heracross flew up into the air for what I guess was some kinda of aerial dive maneuver. "Careful Ralts, you gotta get him before he gets close." I advised and slowly backed away just in case the bug flew off course.
But Ralts seemed to be waiting for something. "Ralts?" I questioned. But as the Heracross began his descent, Ralts released the energy, and the psychic force collapsed right on the head of the Heracross. It immediately took it's toll and the bug flew off course, it's massive horn impaling the ground, lodging into the earth beneath it. In a matter of momens, it was shaking and pulling with it's neck trying to get itself unstuck, but I knew that this was my shot to either take my chance and run, or catch it. Why not both?
"Come on Ralts!" I exclaimed and quickly dashed in to scoop him up. With my poke'mon in my arms, I tossed to poke'ball at the Heracross for one final try. As it absorbed the poke'mon in red light, we bounded over one of the man ledges and logs in the area and hid behind one, being careful not to make a sound. The noise of the poke'ball breaking, or no noise at all, would be the signal of the outcome.
