"Pidge. Tai." She said, "Lets take a rest." It'd been a long while since she'd gotten her first Pokemon from the Professor, and she was still in the same little village. It was a nice enough place, she thought, plenty of space to grow, and lots of nice people and Pokemon around... but the real reason she was still there? The reason everyone else was still congregating in that small town? The Pokemon league had not yet begun. Saarda sighed as she plopped down near the water, and her birds landed even closer, hopping back as the water lapped their feet, chattering to each other jovially. They didn't know yet how hard things would be in the not so distant future. They couldn't. As she watched them, she realized again how young they both were. She lazily pulled some Pokemon food from her pouch, and offered it to them, "If you're hungry..." She said.
She closed her eyes, waiting for the warmth of the sun to seep through her tanktop and shorts. There it was. "Aah." She muttered, feeling muscles ease, as the quiet moment continued. "Lovely."
"Pi Pidgey?" Pidge cooed to her, suddenly standing on her trainer's chest with her poke'pal standing there beside her.
"Tai-low!" He admonished, pointing toward the water. She had to look around the birds- no mean feat when they're standing on your rib cage- to see the surf. There was definitely something there. What it was? She would have to right herself to find out.
"Aaah, if it's not dangerous-"
Pidgey hopped up and down and flapped her wings in irritation, accidentally dislodging Tai, who moved to her shoulder without complaint, because he frankly agreed with Pidge's reaction. "Right, fine, but you'll have to get off for me to sit up." The birds glanced at eachother and hopped off at the same time. "OK, that's getting weird." SHe shook her head. "Every time you look at eachother and do the same thing at the same time, it gives me goosebumps, and to be honest, that's just too many bird refrences for me. I get it! Birds. Haha. You're very funny." She grumbled, "My last name is the name of a bird, my first and second pokemon are birds and they go and give me what? Goosebumps!" She sighed, sitting up, brushing the sand from her body. "Some Variety would be nice. Say, a Zigzagoon, or a Poochyenna, something furry, you know, like a skitty, an eevee, or a-" She frowned as she caught sight of what had made her birds wake her from her dozing state. "Well, that's something..."

"Aww, it's cute." She said, "That thing is not dangerous, guys." Saarda shook her head, "I mean honestly, he's got pink cheeks. Pink Cheeks! Hey little fella-" It jumped a bit, and flicked it's self back across the water. Pidgey cooed, and pointed at it with her wing.
"Do you think he's cute too?" Saarda asked.
Pidgey heaved a sigh, "Pidge Geey!"
"Yeah... not gettin it." She shrugged.
Tailow flew over to the edge of the water, and growled at it ferociously. The Surskit skated back and shot bubbles at Tai.
"Oh..." She cocked her head, "He's a water and... wait a sec." She said, pulling her Pokedex out.
'Surskit: From the tips of its feet, Surskit secretes an oil that enables it to walk on water as if it were skating. This Pokémon feeds on microscopic organisms in ponds and lakes. If Surskit senses danger, it secretes a thick, sugary syrup from the tip of its head. There are some Pokémon that love eating this syrup. They usually live on ponds, but after an evening shower, they may appear on puddles in towns.' The Pokedex said.
"Interesting... Bug and water type... Huh." She looked back at it, then at Tailow, who was Focusing his energy hopefully. He obviously wanted to battle the little bug type. "Maybe we could add him to our team." She said.
"Tai!" Taillow called as the Surskit, frightened, skated away.
"Huh. I guess we should have acted faster..." She said.

"Hey look, there's another one." Saarda said pointing at him. "We missed the last one, lets try again." She said, looking back and forth at her Pokemon. "OK... Tai, fly around his back, and chase him toward land, where Pidge will be waiting with a... well, I want to see if your Sand attack might be used on water. Know what I mean? Make the water unstable for Surskit, then Pidge gets him with a Tackle, and if the Pokeball doesn't work, standby with Peck, Tai." She nodded, "Right, go." The pair of birds went about their orders.
Tai flew up over the Surskit, gaining his attention. The blue bug shot a stream of bubbles at Tai, which misted him lightly due to distance, then Tai dove down sharply using Peck, but just barely- intentionally- missing. The Surskit, thinking himself clever and quick, zoomed closer to the shoreline with a triumphant cry, and another stream of bubbles. Tai cried out, whirled around and dove back at the water skater, which leaped back again, now just about ten feet from the shoreline. Tai missed again, but this time, rather than attacking parallel to the shoreline, he flew out and circled backward so he could drive Surskit as close as possible to land. Pidge taking this as her que, began to work up a sandstorm and then she hurled herself into the bug type just as Tai was breaking off his attack, and flying up to observe the damage.
Surskit was wobbling, trying to get his land legs- to put a spin on an old cliche- beneath him as the Pidgey hit him, causing him to tumble on the sand, unable to get his bearings. He cried out in irritation, and suddenly, a sweet scent filled the air. Pidgey froze, cocking her head, as she hopped closer, completely disarmed.
"Pidge, don't fall for it! Surskit is using sweet scent! He's going to try and hit you with a bubble beam!"
Pidge recognized the urgency in her trainer's voice, but her mind wasn't quite...
Luckily, Tai had not been affected, and he took that moment to attack the bug with Peck, and assist his comrade. Surskit fell back trembling after the peck, now completely on land, seemingly lost. "Suurrr." It cried, as Saarda threw her pokeball. The light enveloped the pokemon... the ball closed. It shook...

"Tai!" She called as the Surskit burst free from the pokeball. The bird dove, using the dive to focus his energy into a ground pounding peck. Surskit cried out as it saw Taillow diving and blew bubble beam desperately. It didn't do much damage, but it did soak Tai. He broke off his attack and flew to Saarda's side to shake off. "Pidge, avoid smelling him, and hit him with a tackle! Tai, next time, don't let a little thing like a bubble beam stop you from hitting your target! You're a Taillow not an itty bitty slugma! Cold water shouldn't faze you, get back in there, don't let Pidgey down!"
Tai bristled, and threw himself back into the fray, Together, they hit the Surskit, which tumbled around til it got back into the water, where it sucked in a bunch of water, and did it's best to soak the birds. The only difference in their flight was speed. Tai was slowed to Pidge's normal speed, and Pidge was slowed just a bit, as her feathers were more dense and the water was shrugged off slightly more quickly. It used sweet scent again. Saarda could smell it. It was a nice smell. Pidge slowed, and almost fell into the water, while Tai, enraged at it's effectiveness against his partner. He attacked again and again, furiously. Most pokemon would have worn themselves out by the time he considered letting up, but not Taillow. He felt his strength increase in proportion to his need. He finally scooped the bug out of the water and cast it onto the beach gently as he could afford to, and stood just slightly apart, between the panting Pidgey and the whimpering Surskit. "Tai LOW!" He squawked, fanning out his wings agressively.
"Stand down, Tai." Saarda said, casting a ball at the weakened pokemon. "You don't need to be so rough. She's fine. See?" She gestured at Pidgey, who was meekly snacking on little bites of Pokemon food. "You did very well, boy, but remember, If we catch him, Surskit will be a friend, not an enemy. We don't want to hurt him, just weaken." She glanced from her still raging Taillow, to the Pokeball, and saw the result of her battle. For better or worse, she wouldn't risk battling further.

Saarda threw her hands up into the air and whooped, "Yeah!" She cried. Tai looked at her curiously, then hopped over to the Pokeball. "We just caught a new friend, Taillow, Pidge, come on over here. You guys did very well. You especially, Tai. What should we call the Surskit?"
Taillow looked at the ball, then realized where the bug had gone, and cried out angrily.
"C'mon, I can't call him that! I don't even think I can make that noise." She laughed. "Be happy, Tai. Surskit is pretty cool. The honey stuff he secretes is-"
Tai pecked the button to open the Pokeball, and watched as the little bug came out in a flash of red light. Surskit dizzily stood up, "Sur?"
"Hey, little fella." Saarda said tenderly, "I'm sorry about the rough welcome." She said patting his head, "But I've got a strong team. They're friendly most of the time." She shot a look at Tai, who had the decency to look slightly abashed. "And so am I. I'm going to be your new trainer, OK?"
The Surskit considered her for a moment then nodded, and flopped onto it's side, dozing.
Saarda chuckled, "I agree. Remember that rest I wanted, guys?" She asked her bird pokemon, "Let's get to it." She lay down, pulling Surskit onto her chest, where he curled up and snored lightly. "I think... a name... hmm..." She scratched her head, "Maelon." She grinned. "I'll call you Maelon. No particular reason." She shrugged as her eyes drooped. "Guys, do you want to go back into your Pokeballs? Or to the hotel? I dunno..." She yawned, "I'm sleepy."
Tai shook his head and posted guard. "Thanks buddy. I'll just nap a bit. Wake me if you need to..." By the time she'd finished speaking, she was already asleep, comfortable in the knowledge that her birds would wake her before anything that might pose a danger came close.
