Saarda drank in the great wide open. Within the city, she'd felt oppressed, chained. It made her anxious, twitchy- quicker to react with violence, as she'd proven earlier. Out here, the bonds held no power. Out here she had the world. She didn't need to conquer it, she held it in her palm like a quiet polished orb of happy. Out here, she had wings. She could fly if she closed her eyes and let the wind rush over her. Out here, silence didn't menace, and she didn't have to worry about getting mugged for her pokemon.
When she went back to that moment in her mind, she remembered it more slowly than she had the last time. The man had appeared, sweat and dirt clouding his face, his gruff voice- disguising the voice of a nervous youth- had shaken with his words. His eyes had darted to-and-fro. His demand was foolhardy. If one knew anything about Growlithe as pokemon, one knew that they were intensely loyal to their trainer. And then she remembered the uniform. Black from head to toe. A red RR emblazoned on the chest.
If there was one thing she knew about criminal elements, it was that they always had their name or titles emblazoned in bold lettering across their chest. RR... was strongly reminiscent of team rocket. When she remembered that, her anger coiled, taut as a spring. She hadn't thought about it. She'd reacted. He wanted to take her pokemon, he could try. She'd felt so satisfied, watching him, immobile in searing pain on the ground. She'd felt pleasure. Somewhere in her mind, she knew it was sick to feel that way, but it was true. It was a bald truth. Bare for anyone with eyes to see. On one level she felt ashamed. On another, she remembered her mother. She remembered how hard she had fought to keep bulbasaur. And she remembered that it had not been enough.
As her thoughts had roiled and boiled, Growlithe noticed, and romped about, trying to gain her attention. He ambled past and rolled about then pounced on her feet, and generally made a nuisance of himself, until she tackled him back. "You odd little bugger." She huffed. "Am I being too stormy faced for you, boy?"
"Grow." He licked her cheek.
"Well, alright. Lets see if we can't scare up some wild pokemon to practice on... maybe even add one or two to our team."

It was not until the Phanpy had made it's stance that Zane appeared on Ponyta's back on top of a nearby hill, the sight of a trainer and wild poke'mon a welcome sight. "She looks familiar..." he mumbled softly, a bit too far away to get a good read on where she was. Though her general stature was much like Saarda's, he could not just go around assuming that people were who he thought they were. So, Zane would move closer, squeezing Ponyta's sides to let her know to move onward. The horse shook her mane of fire and quickly began to trot down toward the trainer. Thankfully Zane was correct in finding what he would call his friend encountering a poke'mon. "Hoy there Saarda! Been a while hasn't it! Don't worry about me just yet, looks like you have something to deal with." he concluded quickly and dismounted from his Ponyta. Returning her to her poke'ball. Zane pointed to the sky. "All right Sora, now you get up there and find me a poke'mon too!" he said with a cheery note in his voice.

Saarda and Emery didn’t have to wait long for a new Pokémon to appear. It was blue and roundish with red markings on its trunk and ears. It’s eyes were black, and its feet had little white nails on the edge. “What is…” Saarda muttered as Growlithe spotted it and cocked his head so far to the side that it his ears were parallel to the ground.
“Growlithe?”
“Your guess is as good as mine.” She said. “Oh, I could…” She went into her pockets and just as she found what she’d been searching for, that is, her pokedex, she heard hoofbeats. “Oh dear. She sent out two more Pokémon and gave the hand signal for readiness. “Something’s comin- oh?” Atop a gorgeous Ponyta sat Zane, her friend from the grove.
"Hoy there Saarda! Been a while hasn't it! Don't worry about me just yet, looks like you have something to deal with."
She chuckled, “It has been a while! It’s OK guys, he’s a friend.” She told her Nidoran♀ and Electrike. Emery was still trying to figure out what the blue thing was. “Grow?” He cocked his head the other way. “Right! I’ll deal with this guy… and then we can have our happy reunion.” She laughed, turning back to the thing which had so enraptured Emery. Speaking of whom, Emery had flattened himself to the ground, and was anxiously approaching the cute Pokémon which seemed to be folicking obliviously a few feet away. “Emery. Hold.” She commanded. “Pokedex, what in the world is that?”
‘ Phanpy, the Long Nose Pokémon. Phanpy uses its powerful snout to express affection. Not realizing its strength can send you flying. It uses its long nose to shower itself. When others gather around, they thoroughly douse each other with water. These Pokémon can be seen drying their soaking-wet bodies at the edge of water. Phanpy's big ears serve as broad fans. When it becomes hot, it flaps the ears busily to cool down. Even the young are very strong. It is strong despite its compact size. It can easily pick up and carry an adult human on its back. ’
“Alright.” She said, “What… what kind of Pokémon ? It looks like a ground type.”
’Phanpy is a ground type Pokémon . A Pokémon of this approximate age and size could probably use the following moves; Flail, Defense curl, Tackle, and either growl or odor sleuth.’
“Ok… Too bad I don’t have little Maelon with me.” She chuckled, “Ground… Alright. Well, Growlithe. You’re up. Princess standby. Sorry Trish. You won’t be effective. Emery. Leer.” Emery darted over to Phanpy with glee, then as he caught the long nose Pokémon’s attention, he glared at her menacingly. She took a step back, raising her nose in warning. She knew she was strong. She also knew she was big and he wasn’t. “Avoid that trunk, Emery. Use Ember, then bite hard on the spot Ember hits.” Emery, to his credit, did not hesitate. He eagerly attacked the Phanpy with a powerful ember, which hit the Pokémon on the left flank. “Dig in, Emery –no, get back, don’t let it hit you!” She called, as it swung it’s trunk grazing Emery’s side because he didn’t move when his trainer told him too. “EMERY!” He let go and backed away repentantly. Phanpy was not forgiving, she was growling furiously. “Emery hit her in the face with Ember then return to the spot you bit earlier.” She called. The growlithe spat flames at the elephant Pokémon , who, blinded, flapped her ears, trying to dislodge the things which caused her pain. Emery bit again in the place he had before and shook her side. She teetered side to side but did not falter. “Use ember close up!” She called. “Hit her ears!”
Emery barked and blew flames onto the Pokémon ’s ears, which, made her cry out and flail wildly. The attack didn’t hit, but it was close. Emery looked back at his trainer with anxiety. He knew how badly it would have hurt to be hit by one of those attacks. “Ember!” Saarda called, directing her Pokémon to damage its adversary.
As Growlithe leapt to the side, she saw the broken flesh and bubbling welts where he had hurt the cute blue Pokémon, and it made her own skin feel raw. “Hurry and finish this, Emery!” She said, “Ember now!” He used ember, sparking flames around the Pokémon which would die soon, but caused her to panic, and run away. “Block her, and don’t miss again!” She called, as Emery bolted around and snarled at the Phanpy, pushing it back toward the fire. “Leer then roar!” She said. She wanted Phanpy to run back into the fire. Phanpy backed away and cried out in fear and pain as the heat of the fire met her backside. Roar made her turn tail and run toward Saarda. “Oh.” She said as Phanpy rushed toward her. Luckily for her, Princess saw the big blue Pokémon . Saw it rushing toward her trainer. She flew into a jealous rage! No way was any other Pokémon going to touch her trainer. Saarda-psht obviously- belonged solely to Princess.
Princess zipped across the field and crashed into Phanpy causing very little damage but poisoning her the same way she’d poisoned Xant the day she’d helped catch it. Incidentally… she hurt herself. “Princess return!” Phanpy, however began feeling the effects of the poison immediately, wobbling woozling. She looked back and forth, shaking her head, “Emery! Finish it!” She called, but her command was unnecessary, because just as she spoke the words, out of the flames flew a determined, furious Growlithe. From the air he hit the blue elephant’s back with flames, then landed on it’s shoulders and bit as he used his momentum to pull it to the ground in a spectacular attack Saarda had no name for. “Good boy!” She shouted. “Let go now.” She said, calling him back gently. He released the shaking pokemon reluctantly, and retreated only a few steps. “Pokeball…” She muttered, “Lets catch this.” She said as she threw the ball. A red light shot out, enveloped the blue elephant and called it back into the ball. Goosebumps raised on her arms, and she had eyes only for that red… white- red light. It shook… it shook… it-

When Phanpy broke free, Emery leapt back, snarling, and placed himself between his trainer and the weakened ground type. “Growlithe!” He barked, advancing, head low. He seemed to be herding it. To and fro, he moved, blocking her escape each time she saw a free path. She was obviously in pain, afraid. She growled but it had no effect. Growlithe was too angry. He was too-gotta love that pup- dumb to realize that Phanpy was two feet taller than him, and could likely hurt him very badly if she hit him. He kept thinking, remembering, snarling in his thoughts, about the day he’d met his trainer. His friend. The day he’d lunged for her throat, broken free of the battle and attacked her. He’d seen Phanpy doing the same thing. He’d seen her headed toward Saarda. On some level he might have known that the fury he felt was more self-directed than directed at Phanpy. She was not at fault. Not really. She’d been running from him… but Emery didn’t think that. His thoughts were limited to “ember… Roar… Lear… Bite…” He knew he wasn’t smart. He knew he was easily distracted so he allowed no stray thoughts. “Ember… Roar… Lear… Bite!” He thought over and over. As he allowed Princess’ poison to worry the Phanpy’s body. “Ember…” He shot flames, as she leapt at him, a desperate cry forming in her mouth. “Roar!” His roar stopped her in her tracks. “Leer.” She weakened, lowered her defenses, stumbled backward. BITE! He lunged at her, and caught her ear, ripping to the side, pulling her to the ground where he repeated the two damaging moves. EMBER BITE! He bit into her, mouth aflame with his ember and gnawed on her trunk. Her ears. Her injured shoulder. Her back leg.
Phanpy stumbled away, flailing her trunk. She hit her mark once, causing Emery to jump back, favoring his left side. He barked barked barked, intimidating her, making her feel weak, helpless. Emery bit again, and leaped away as she tried to tackle him. He barked more, leering, growling, Phanpy shrank but tried again to attack. When that failed, she shrunk into herself curling her body, trying to protect herself from attack. She was obviously low on energy. “Growlithe step back.” Saarda commanded. He hesitated. “EMERY!” She shouted, “Obey me!” Growlithe shrank back pacing to and fro before his trainer, snarling at the blue elephant. If she didn’t catch it, he would attack again. “Do you know why I insist that you obey me?” She asked him, pokeball in hand.
Emery shook his head. He knew he should, but that was all.
“I insist because when you do not obey, things go wrong. I am older and wiser than you are. Do not fight unless I give the word. Do not bite unless I say so. Do not flame without my permission. Emery, you must listen to me. Only attack on my word.” She said, patting his head. She then threw the ball at the Phanpy. Poor thing was hurt and scared. Saarda hoped she would be able to catch it so that she could heal it...

As Sora's wings made a 'swish' in the air, Zane turned his attention to Saarda and her predicament. He knew Sora would get his attention if she had found a poke'mon, so the the young trainer allowed himself this distraction. He knew not about the Phanpy before her, so he needed his own read on the creature with his poke'dex. "A ground type, like Sandshrew and Gligar. I wonder who she will send against it." he wondered. After gaining his second ground type, Zane began to do a little study at the local library about the types strength and weaknesses. He came across something that intrigued him right away when researching. "Ground is one of the strongest types offensively: it is effective against five other types has ground poke'mon have some of the strongest attacks. Unfortunately, many Ground-type Pokemon are dual types, and leaves them with a couple major disadvantages."
After learning this Zane quickly did some more research on each of his poke'mon and learned that Sandshrew was just plain old ground, which meant good news for him. However, as he suspected from just the basis that she could fly, Sora was flying and ground with weaknesses to only water and ice. The combination changed Zane's perspective about his scout because of the fact she was potent as a ground type, but also had minimal weaknesses. It made her seem lik an obvious choice to become his main attacker. Plus with the dislike of the poke'ball, he and Sora had become closer than his other poke'mon.
But today wasn't about her. It was about Sasha, his new Sandshrew he had caught the day before here in the foothills. he had to test the limits of his new poke'mon and what she could do as both an integral part of the team and as a fighter. Obviously from the fight before, Zane knew about it's ability to burrow down into a hole and use guerrilla tactics to whittle down opponents, but he wanted to see what it could do in a straight up fight. That's why he had Sora in the air trying to find a potential victim.
Meanwhile, his eyes watched Saarda's battle. She was going for an all out assault with ember on the ground type poke'mon. "I wonder if Phanpy knows and ground type moves? That could be a serious problem for her growlithe." he thought, but didn't see the wild poke'mon retaliating with anything that seemed relatively ground like. But in a matter of moments, had the burning poke'mon on the run toward her Nidoran who seemed to be guarded the flank so she couldn't escape. The potent poison of her Nidroan went to work quickly, and Zane could see the poke'mon faltering. "Catch it now..." he said quietly, the cries of Sora evident in his ears. Once she threw the poke'ball he had to responded to a boop on the head and a beckons toward what seemed to be a moving black cloud going past nearby.
But it wasn't a cloud, it was a large pack of dog like poke'mon that looked like they need some interaction. "All right! Good job Sora. Sasha go!" he said with a smile, sending his new Sandshrew out into the foothills. The small shrew like poke'mon looked around for a bit and then clambered over to Zane awaiting some kind of direction. "Well aren't you obedient. See those poke'mon? Go get one's attention." he said with a smile, letting Sashe do her obvious method of sneak attack. Soon the creature was underground and moving toward where the pack stopped for a moment. In an explosion of dirt, Sasha came shooting out from the ground underneath one of the Houndours head with a strong tackle attack. The pack scattered in fear and the Houndour stood dazed. "Come this way Sasha!" Zane shouted, the small poke'mon quickly scampering closer and closer to him. Once the dog regained it's cognitive sense, it gave chase, just what he wanted it to do.
"Defense Curl, prepare for a tough fight Sasha." he directed, and just as the quick dog was upon her, she had curled into a ball. A slobbery mouth came upon her curled body, but Sasha's tough skin prevented any real damage. "Open up for a surprise tackle, he's right on top of you!" Zane shouted, the little sandshrew coming out of the ball as soon as the Houndour's mouth let go for just a second. A quick jab from it's hand to the dog's head left the opponent dazed and confused, and Sandshrew merely curled back up into a ball. The trainer looked down at his Gligar with a shrug and took the poke'ball from his belt. "It is rather lost after such a blow." he told himself, throwing the poke'ball to catch it. "Sasha retreat over here while you can." he said, and the poke'mon merely rolled it's way over to its trainer.

When the ball clicked closed, Saarda rushed over to it, released the pokemon and immediately tended each of her hurts. They were nowhere near a pokemon center, so she couldn't go to one of them to cure he poison. Phanpy, to her credit didn't seem to hold the pain she was in against Saarda. She simply stood still, and allowed the trainer to salve her burns, cure her poison, and heal her skin. Saarda spoke tenderly to the elephant pokemon, introducing herself and comforting her. Then complimenting her on her excellent endurance. Then, she ended her speech, that one which every trainer gives their new pokemon, with "Welcome to our family, sweet heart." And she opened her arms wide. Phanpy threw up her trunk and nuzzled-well, knocked back is more like it- her trainer. "Well!" She laughed, "I'm glad to meet you too!"
Phanpy happily greeted Trish and Princess. No hard feelings were held... Then... she saw Emery. She squeeked in a very unphanpy like way, and ran behind Saarda. She was definitely tattling on Emery for being mean. "Em, come here. Phanpy, dear, this is Emery. He is a good boy and won't hurt you again."
Phanpy peeked out and sniffled. "I promise, Phanpy, just say hi." She peeked out and hesitantly stepped closer to Emery, who was doing his best to be nonthreatening, by wagging his tail, and lolling his tongue.. well that might have been incidental, but he was trying to be friendly.
"Phanpy?"
"Growlithe!" He barked happily and leaped over to give her a puppy kiss. She just stood there, braced for an attack, but Emery wasn't attacking, he dropped to the ground and rolled around in the grass, then he saw something, and cocked his head, "Grow?"
Saarda looked behind them and saw a pack of black dog pokemon. "Woah." She muttered as she realized that Zane was catching one. "What are they?"
'Houndour, the Dark Pokémon. Houndour travel in packs and communicate though barks that only they can understand, in order to surround their prey. This Pokémon's remarkable teamwork is unparalleled.. Around dawn, its ominous howl echoes through the area to announce that this is its territory.'
"Wish we could catch one of those." Saarda said with a smile, "Wouldn't that be cool? Another dog type to play with." Emery nodded emphatically, and wagged his tail, while Phanpy started playing in the grass again.
Saarda watched as Zane used his sandshrew to wear down the dark type, and then as he threw his pokeball she crossed her fingers for him. It seemed so much quicker for him than it ever was for her, when the ball clicked shut. "Caught it!" She exclaimed, happy for him. "Good job, Zane!" She chuckled as she realized she was a little jealous. She liked Phanpy, sure, but... she really liked dog pokemon. And Houndour would fit in perfectly with Emery and Trish. She looked around for the pack, thinking maybe she could engage one in battle, but they were gone. She sighed, and approached. "Do you think you'll name it?" She asked, glancing back to make sure all her pokemon had followed her, which they had. Emery had persuaded Phanpy to come with wiggles and pestering licks. She would rather follow than fight. Besides that, she liked her trainer. She was going to come anyway. "By the way, Sandshrew was awesome in that battle." Then she spotted the Gligar, and squinted, "I... well, aren't you an odd looking lady." She murmured, identifying the purple stingered bat-like pokemon with her pokedex.
Gligar, the FlyScorpion Pokémon. Gligar uses the cape-like wings on its back to fly from tree to tree quickly and quietly. It builds its nest on a steep cliff. When it is done gliding, it hops along the ground back to its nest. Gligar glides through the air without a sound as if it were sliding. This Pokémon hangs on to the face of its foe using its clawed hind legs and the large pincers on its forelegs, then injects the prey with its poison barb.
"Gligar..." She murmured. "Interesting. So, you've got a bunch of new pokemon, huh? Me too."

Zane's clenched fist pumped once in self reward as he stepped toward the prize. The rush he felt during every battle had him trembling slightly from adrenaline, though it was short lived, like most of his battles. Was it just dumb luck that made his battles an easy win? Or was it some higher power that dictated the every move? Guess we will never find out...
Picking up the Poke'ball, Zane released his newest poke'mon witha smile on his face. He turned to see an elated Saarda, being trailed by the Phanpy he had seen her battling before. "Ah so she did catch it, nice! Maybe I'll find one too..." he thought, thinking back to his other two ground type poke'mon. A small daydream of a collection of ground types flashed through his head and put a silly smile on his lips. "That would be fun."
"Heh thanks! Good job yourself! Looks like you caught that Phanpy. " he said in response. And then looked down to the still woozy Dark pokemon with a raised eye brow. "Hmmm, I'll name him Shadow. Cause his pack was like a shadow of a cloud moving across the hills." he said with a confident smile and reached down to scratch the poke'mon by the ear. "What about your new poke'mon, have anything in mind for a nickname?" he inquired quickly.
The warm sun was beating down upon them, but it was not to uncomfortable, a slight wind caressing the hills and cooling it down just a bit. She complimented Sasha and Zane's shrew seemed to blush and curl up once again, afraid to take a compliment. "Come on Sasha, it's all right, say thank you." he said with a nudge of the foot. The tiny poke'mon merely mumbled a thank you from inside the ball, embarrassed by the notoriety. Zane couldn't help by smile because of how cute it was, but thankfully Saarda changed her attention to Sora his Gligar. "Yea, that's Sora, and as you heard, this is Sasha. Two of some of the few you haven't met yet." he smiled and nodded his head. "I can see that, you have a Growlithe now, that's pretty awesome if I may say so. But... your Phanpy is more awesome. I have discovered I kinda have a liking for ground type poke'mon." he revealed, scratching his hair through his beanie.
